Israel calls the Hizbollah attacks an “act of war” by Lebanon and promises a “very painful and far-reaching” response. “Far-reaching” as in Damascus and Tehran, the primary supporters of Hizbollah? Me thinks so. A few weeks ago, Israeli jets buzzed the palace of Syria’s President Assad. This time, they may drop a few bombs. From Reuters:
MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (Reuters) - Hizbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers and killed up to seven Israelis in violence on either side of the Lebanese border on Wednesday, further inflaming Middle East tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert described the Hizbollah attacks as an “act of war” by Lebanon and promised a “very painful and far-reaching” response.
…
Israeli ground forces crossed into Lebanon to search for the captured soldiers, Israeli Army Radio said. Hizbollah and the Lebanese authorities said there was no large-scale incursion.
Israeli troops have not struck deep into Lebanon since they withdrew from a southern border strip in 2000 after waging an 18-year war of attrition with Hizbollah’s Shi’ite fighters.
…
“It is an act of war by the state of Lebanon against the state of Israel in its sovereign territory,” he told a news conference.
“We are already responding with great strength … The cabinet will convene tonight to decide on a further military response by the Israel Defense Forces,” Olmert said, threatening “very painful and far-reaching” action.
Now we hear that Syria is officially supporting Lebanon’s actions. From the Jerusalem Post:
Syria’s vice president blamed Israel for the escalating violence in Lebanon and Palestinian territories Wednesday, and Arab countries worried over possible Israeli retaliation against Syria after the capture of two Israeli soldiers by its ally, Hizbullah.
Syria also is host to the top leadership of the Palestinian Hamas, whose fighters seized an Israeli soldier two weeks ago - putting Damascus at the center of blame by Israel and the United States in the crisis.
Israel is already making threats against Damascus. From United Press International:
In Israel, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected any possible negotiations with Hezbollah to arrange a swap deal.
“All the way I have announced that we will not surrender to terrorist organizations or to blackmail and we will not conduct negotiations with the terrorist groups,” Olmert said.
He also lashed out at Syria, saying “the Syrian government proved to be a terrorist government by nature and encourages terrorist groups inside and outside its territory to carry out bloody operations.”
“Of course, there will be proper preparations against the Syrian government,” Olmert added in a veiled threat against Damascus.
Israel is taking this very seriously, as they should, and we could be days away from an all-out war in the Mideast.
UPDATE: The Jerusalem Post just reported that “a very high ranking military officer said that if the soldiers were not returned in good condition, Israel would turn Lebanon back 20 years by striking its vital infrastructure.” I expect that goes ditto for Iran and Syria as well.
