Shock and Awe

The 79-item Iraq Study Group report achieves the distinction of being both fatuous and stultifying at the same time. Going for the trifecta, it is also, if fully implemented, damaging to U.S. security interests.

The report’s fatuousness is a function of its tone; has a bigger group of blowhards of limited talents — puffed up with self-importance — ever set pen to paper? Its stultifying quality is a result of its juvenile content. What 6th grader wouldn’t be proud to write recommendation #19 — “the president and administration must remain in constant contact with the Iraqi government” — in an essay for social studies class? The report’s ability to negatively affect U.S. security is multifaceted. In the interests of simplicity, consider just 2 shocking recommendations: seek assistance from a country that desires only our failure and destruction — Iran, and betray the lone free state in the Middle East, and our ally — Israel.

This report deserves scorn and repudiation. The media, of course, have greeted these recommedations, delivered ex cathedra by the majestic co-chairs, with awe and wonder. That in itself should invalidate whatever credibility might have accrued to this report.

Lindsay Lohan is not yet old enough to drink but has been attending AA meetings, reports the Chicago Tribune.

“Yes, she’s been attending some meetings, and it’s going to be a slow process,” publicist Leslie Sloane tells People. “This is a positive. Let’s hope that the press doesn’t turn it into a negative.”

Sloan hopes that the media won’t follow Lohan to or from the meetings.

“Maybe if [the press] backs off on her she’ll be in a good space,” the publicist adds. “Let’s see if we don’t have to hear about it every day, and they’re following her and trying to find her. Because that will just really not be good.”

Lohan is a good actress who has criticized much lately for her semi-literate condolence letter to the late Robert Altman’s family. She claims that it was written on a Blackbery device, which, if true, certainly explains the typos. Shoot, I can’t even compose a blog post without a typo here and there. The letter was also nice — nice in the sense that she wrote it herself, expressed heartfelt feelings, and didn’t leave it to her publicist to write. For all of that, Lohan deserves a great deal of credit.

However, on December 1st, Lohan showed that she still has some growing up to do. From The Online Wire:

Last night she must have canceled her meeting so she could slam down champagne and cause a ruckus at the GQ Men of the Year dinner.

In attendance were the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore, Jay-Z, Jennifer Connelly and Magic Johnson, but there was one special someone that when Lohan saw, she proceeded to “flip out”.

That someone was none other than Jessica Biel, the star of The Illusionist, there with her assistant. Biel’s assistant used to work for Lohan before she quit several months ago.

According to a reported witness, Lohan started screaming, “If she stays, I’m outta here! I can’t look at that girl! I can’t believe you would allow an assistant in here, she doesn’t belong in here!”

After this Lohan was paid no attention to by the other celebs that were obviously tired of the spoiled brat. Will Ferrell, who overheard the drunk, turned to DiCaprio, Affleck and Gore and said, “Who cares about that freak anymore, anyway?”

This caused the whole table to burst out in laughter. Still, Lohan proceed later, with a champagne glass in hand, to try and flirt with Dicaprio. Of course she had no luck and won’t be sailing on the Titanic in his arms anytime soon.

Lohan may mature into a fine actress if Hollywood doesn’t ruin her first. She’s doing her best to help Hollywood by ruining herself but she has a chance to redeem herself. She’s decidedly in need of a grown-up in her life who is wise enough to tell her “no.” Her recent “flashing” antics with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton ought to be cause for great alarm for any adults (if there are any) that are in these kids’ lives.

Hollywood is a rough world in which it’s easy to develop an over-inflated ego and a disdain for the “little person,” like Jennifer Biel’s assistant. It’s easy for Christians to criticize Hollywood and its actors, but we should really be praying for them. How many of us could resist the temptations that Hollywood has to offer? If we pray to deliver ourselves from temptations, how much more should we pray to deliver others from temptations that we couldn’t handle ourselves?
