'Operation Spear' begins in western Iraq
The U.S. launched a major military operation in western Iraq to shut down insurgents and to slam shut the influx of foreign fighters from Syria. Loyal followers of The Belmont Club have, of course been following events in western Iraq for a long time. Operation Spear isn’t the first strike at the Syria Iraq border but it’s the most publicized.
There were reports of skirmishes between U.S. and Syrian troops more than a year ago and my sources tell me that the Bush administration has been applying extreme diplomatic pressure to Syria since before the Iraqi invasion. My guess is that the U.S. has quietly allowed the Syria-Iraq border to remain somewhat porous as a bait to draw terrorists into Iraq. It’s good strategery to fight the terrorists in Iraq rather than wait for them to come here where shooting them is somewhat frowned upon.
