The concern during the 90’s was that the purloined FBI files found in the Clinton White House were used to dig up dirt on political opponents—and allies—in an effort to “encourage” cooperation with the administration. Well, Vicente Fox must have gotten some FBI files on the Bush family.
We discover now that the adminstration, in 2004, signed an agreement with the Mexican government declaring that illegal aliens, once “legalized”, would be able to get back credit for
social security taxes supposedly paid on forged, fraudulent or stolen social security numbers. And that the money can be sent to these newly minted Americans even if they are living, once more, back in Mexico. This will certainly be a comfort to younger Boomers, X’ers, and Y’ers, concerned that social security might be bankrupt at the time when they are old enough to collect benefits. What’s 12 million more beneficiaries between friends?
Curiously, the administration failed to publicize this decision; no doubt in an effort to avoid needlessly alarming nativist, jingoistic, bigoted, hispanophobic Americans.
This president, and his administration, make it very difficult for conservatives and other Americans who have stuck with them in the interests of national security and the prosecution of the war on Islamist terrorism. But successful war-fighting by a nation requires that the governed trust the governing. And instances like this shred that trust down to the molecular level.
It almost makes one regret Nancy Pelosi’s promise of no impeachment.
