Iran's Supreme Spiritual Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, dead or dying
by Michael McCullough at 12:47 PM
Depending upon whom you read.
United Press says he’s still kicking, Pajamas Media says he’s dead. Either way, there’s no doubt that the 67-year old leader is battling cancer and, if he is still alive, that he does not have much longer to live.
Khamenei is considered slightly more moderate than President Ahmadinejad (not a difficult thing to be), though he is also devoted to the predicted return of the 12th imam. If Khamenei is indeed dead, his replacement will be decided by Iran’s Council of Experts, consisting of 86 clerics. If the clerics decide that it is in the best interests of Iran to cooperate with the rest of the world, they may well choose a more moderate leader, which could spell trouble for Ahmadinejad’s government. It is entirely conceivable though that they could elect a leader just as hardline as Ahmadinejad, thus further destabilizing the region.
Some say trouble comes in threes. If 2007 is the year of trouble for evil leaders, Saddam would be number 1, Khamenei would be number 2, and a lot of people would rejoice if Castro were number 3.
