Al-Qaida in Iraq takes heavy losses

What? I thought that there was no Al-Qaida in Iraq? Isn’t that what the left continues to tell us? One thing that the mainstream media has mostly failed to take notice of is that Al-Qaida has shifted the vast majority of its efforts to Iraq over the past several years. Bin Laden made it clear in his three most recent speeches that Iraq was the center of the War on Terror. Surprisingly, Newsweek reported on this last December, saying:

At that meeting, according to Taliban sources, Osama bin Laden’s men officially broke some bad news to emissaries from Mullah Mohammed Omar, the elusive leader of Afghanistan’s ousted fundamentalist regime. Their message: Al Qaeda would be diverting a large number of fighters from the anti-U.S. insurgency in Afghanistan to Iraq. Al Qaeda also planned to reduce by half its $3 million monthly contribution to Afghan jihadi outfits.

All this was on the orders of bin Laden himself, the sources said. Why? Because the terror chieftain and his top lieutenants see a great opportunity for killing Americans and their allies in Iraq and neighboring countries such as Turkey, according to Taliban sources who complain that their own movement will suffer. … Bin Laden believes that Iraq is becoming the perfect battlefield to fight the “American crusaders” and that the Iraqi insurgency has been “100 percent successful so far,” according to a Taliban participant at the mid-November meeting who goes by the nom de guerre Sharafullah.

This information turned out to be absolutely true. The much-vaunted spring Afghan offensive that liberals wring their hands over every year never materialized in 2007. Part of it was no doubt due to increased coalition forces seeking out Afghan terrorists late winter and early spring, but the majority of the lack of the Afghan spring offensive was due to the fact that Al-Qaida has diverted the overwhelming number of its assets to Iraq.

Bin Laden, however, made a fatal mistake:  Iraq has become the perfect military theater in which to kill Al-Qaida thugs. From United Press International

BAGHDAD, Sept. 13 (UPI) — Al-Qaida militants in Iraq have taken heavy losses in two joint U.S.-Iraqi raids north of Baghdad, the U.S. military reported Thursday.

In one operation involving more than 1,000 U.S. troops and Iraq Special Forces in the Hemreen mountain area and Diyala river valley, three al-Qaida fighters were killed and 80 others were arrested, the Army statement said.

The report said four of the arrested men are considered senior leaders in the terror group. Kuwait’s KUNA news agency reported. U.S. air support was used to conclude the raid, after which a major weapons cache was found, the statement said.

Elsewhere in Salah Al-Din province, U.S. forces arrested 12 al-Qaida suspects and destroyed an entire house packed with explosives and weaponry, the report said.

Yes, dear Democrats — Iraq is the center of the war on Al-Qaida whether you like it or not. If we pull out before the war is finished, hundreds of thousands if not millions of people will die. But the Democrats don’t care. They did not care that pulling out of Vietnam caused the deaths of millions of people. They do not care that pulling out of Iraq will destabilize the Middle East and that many will die. They do not care that America will lose respect if it pulls out — remember how bin Laden told reporters after 9/11 that Clinton’s retreat from Somalia gave al-Qaida the belief that America will cave in if Americans are killed?

Make no mistake:  If Al-Qaida is wiped out in Iraq, it will be wiped out virtually everywhere. And that is the worst fear of the Democrats because they have played petty politics with a very real war since shortly after 9/11. If we do not win in Iraq, we will be fighting the same people again within 10 years — and next time it will be a nuclear war.
