Mainstream media's slow collapse

bodice_ripping_journalism.jpgImagine a world where news is not controlled or manipulated by biased reporters. That world may be coming quickly as newspapers adjust to the huge declines in circulation:

  • The Los Angeles Times named its fourth editor in three years yesterday.
  •  New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller said yesterday he will cut 100 of the paper’s 1,330 newsroom jobs this year
  • The Washington Post said last week it will soon offer the third round of buyouts since 2003 in an effort to reduce the 785-person newsroom staff.

What will fill the space? The broadcast media is faring no better than the print media, with ratings for the 3 main networks in continued decline. FOX and CNN both claim that they’re doing well, while it’s universally agreed that no one watches MSNBC except for the entertainment of Chris Matthews fawning over Barack Obama.
