Absolutely terrible news. Details are sketchy for now.
UPDATE: I was wrong about my suspicions. The Washington Post (via MSNBC) is reporting that the shooter was an 89-year old white supremacist named James von Brunn. One of the guards shot is in serious condition. Please pray for him.
I’ve never understood the whole racial superiority schtick, regardless of what race claims superiority. It is a dangerous belief that leads to violence against those considered less superior.
White supremacism is ugly. But every race — and even many tribes — believe in their own superiority. It was the belief in Hutu supremacy that led to the genocide of hundreds of thousand of Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
No race or ethnic group is superior to any other. In God’s sight, we all have an inherent human dignity.
A gunman opened fire inside the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, wounding a security guard before other officers returned fire, officials said.
David Schlosser, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, said two people were shot — the security guard and the gunman. Both were transferred to a local hospital, he said.
Schlosser said the gunman entered the museum shortly before 1 p.m. ET carrying a “long gun,” but that it’s unclear whether he was carrying a rifle or a shotgun. He shot one security guard, Schlosser said, and then two other security guards returned fire, wounding the shooter.
There were conflicting reports about how many people were wounded. Another law enforcement official said three people were shot, but that there are no fatalities.
“The scene is secure,” the source said. Police and other law enforcement, including the FBI’s Terrorism Task Force, have surrounded the museum site.
Witnesses said they heard a series of gunshots, and did not immediately know what was happening.
