My odds-on favorite: Janice Rogers Brown

It's a guessing game now, but my money as of this moment is still on Janice Rogers Brown. Why?

  • She is a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, which is behind only the Supreme Court in its influence amongst judges and lawyers
  • The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is traditionally a stepping stone to the Supreme Court
  • Brown recently received confirmation to her position by the Senate, making it harder for the Democrats to argue that she's an unacceptable extremist
  • She is a black female born as a sharecropper's daughter in segregation-era Alabama
  • She served honorably for many years on the California Supreme Court
  • She's tough enough to make it through the confirmation process
  • She's a pro-life conservative -- Bush won't forget who brought him to the dance
